Studio visit with Wezlew

Name: Wesley John Lewis aka Wezlew.
Age: 26 years young.
Hometown: Umhlanga, Durban, South Africa.

If you don’t already know, Wez is an all-around creative, making things that make him happy. It’s a full-time gig, doing design work, painting, taking photos, surfing, and making his own magazine. Always looking for ways to create and change the way people look at life, we caught up with him via electronic mail correspondence…

What’s one of your favorite photos you’ve taken recently and why?

Recently, it’s probably this one. Why? Haha because it makes me different somehow.

Get’s you right in the feels. Who or what are you inspired by at the moment?

I draw inspiration from many artists and things. People right now, I think a big push is coming from Jerry Lorenzo, designer of Fear of God.

How did you first get into visual communication?

Saved up a hell’ve a lot of cash and decided to study.

What was the biggest challenge you had when you started getting into design?

Making older people realize I know better and that everyone has to change at some point.

What was one thing that was crucial in getting you where you’re at now?

Always give someone more than they asked for.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a director and dream maker?

Mmm, probably a lifeguard or something to do with the ocean.

How’re things going with TMM, what can we look forward to?

We’ve got some huge things on the way, we have a writer now so you don’t have to see my shitty typos anymore (LOLs), we’re going hardcover (OMG, yes please!), and all I can say is prepare to party and have a good time. Design wise, I hope you like foiling.

That sounds epic man, started off good, and getting better each issue.

Now, if you could jump on a plane right now, where would you go and why?

The Philippines, always wanted to go.

What are you listening to or watching at the moment?

Disco makes me happy – Disco Baby

Who’re three people we should keep an eye out for?

Photo wise: Olive Davis, she’s got some potential.
Design wise: Teager Eales
Surf: Luke Slijpen is back.

What are you most excited about?

I’ve started a few new adventures with brands:

Arvo – A rolling cannabis company based out of LA with a good friend, Anders. Looks like big things coming out of it. Lots of new content, more adventuring, and outdoor experiences I guess. – A jewelry company a few friends and I created during lockdown; we should be live by December just in time for the rush – Enjoy.

The boarders opening up and everything going back to normal, wouldn’t mind getting on a plane to the Phillippines soon.
