It was 6h30 on a crisp Winters morning when the crew met up in a parking near the Melkbos slipway. I had left Muizenberg an hour and a half prior to collect foil design director Clinton from Scarborough, and we spent the morning drive discussing the shoot and getting ourselves psyched up for the frigid West Coast waters. They’re known to be pretty sharky too. At this point, I was completely unsure about what the surf foil mission entailed…

After rigging up the boards, launching the ski’s, and readying the camera gear, the team was off in search of unbroken swell. James and Jacques, both Melkbos locals, had a peak in mind so we headed straight there, just in time for the rising sun. I was gently encouraged off of the ski and into position just behind backline.

When surf foiling with the ski, you’re able to get up onto the foil before the wave has formed, allowing you to be whipped into the perfect position before releasing the ski rope. This, in turn, means that your wave count shoots up astronomically when compared to paddle surfing the foil board, with the added bonus of having the ski collect you for the next wave – a perfect combination for a dreamy session.

The morning light was exquisite on the glassy ocean, with cloud cover that presented some amazing diffused light. The low light, however, meant that the cameras shutter speed slowed down, giving the images some character in the form of speed blurs…

After about two hours of waves being shared, the riders were knackered, and I was very pleased to be getting out of the water and back onto dry land…
